FarmVille dominates iPhone charts

Every week, Gamasutra rounds up the top-grossing iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad applications, as current that day in the iTunes App Store. This week's U.S. revenue charts see FarmVille and Tap Pet Hotel earning top iPhone sales, while We Rule Deluxe and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing emerge as big sellers on the iPad.

These charts allow end users to see who is making the most money on the App Store that day. It differs significantly from the Top 10 Games chart, which is ranked by sales, and therefore is dominated by lower-priced titles that sell more copies.

Data comes courtesy of Apple's public sales information. All titles in the App Store's "Games" category are considered in chart rankings.

Video Games Qualify For First Amendment Protection

www.gamasutra.com.  The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the video game industry in a 7-2 vote on Monday morning, striking down a hotly-debated California video game law that sought to place government restrictions on the sale of violent video games to minors.

The long-awaited, landmark ruling sets a precedent for the government's role in the regulation of video game industry, and helps place the video game industry on equal ground with other forms of media in terms of government regulation.

The Court stated that the California law "violated the First Amendment."

"Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. Like protected books, plays, and movies, they communicate ideas through familiar literary devices and features distinctive to the medium,".

The Court ...

Angry Birds Hits 250 Millions Downloads

iPhone and Android mega-hit Angry Birds has now been downloaded 250 million times across all versions and platforms.

The figure, confirmed by Rovio founder Peter Vestebacka to TechCrunch, means that the franchise has seen 50 million downloads in the last four weeks, since the company revealed last month that it had seen 200 million total downloads.

Only three months ago, Rovio said that the franchise had seen 100 million downloads overall. The original Angry Birds was among the top selling iOS apps in 2010, and led first day sales on Apple's Mac app store in January.

Rovio is currently working on a location-based platform for the series called Angry Birds Magic, which will eventually be built into all Angry Birds ...

Infinity Blade Creators Say They Have Cleared $10M

This is when you start wondering if you're in the wrong line of work. In only six months, the popular iOS game Infinity Blade exceeded US$10 million in earnings, according to an Epic Games press release posted today.

The sword-fighting, third-person slasher game was released in December to much acclaim, although a TUAW reviewer experienced some disappointment with it. Many were wowed by the game's rich graphics, which were thought to be impossible on a handheld device like a smartphone. It's now clear that those graphics, combined with the popularity of role-playing games, have made Infinity Blade a hit and lead to Epic Games' impressive take.

Other iOS games have had huge profits before, but what ...

Mass Effect 3 Coming Out in 2012

One of the holiday season's heavy hitters has bowed out of the fourth quarter. Today, via Facebook, BioWare announced that Mass Effect 3 will now arrive on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 during the first three months of 2012. The new date puts it in the similar launch window of Mass Effect 2, which launched in January 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PC and in January 2011 for the PS3.

Mass Effect 3 needs to cook for a bit longer, says BioWare. "The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations," said Mass Effect series executive producer Casey ...

A variety of new controls will be made available by that crazy new controller with a 6.2-inch touchscreen embedded in it. Notably, you won't have to use the 6.2-inch behemoth if you don't want too -- the Wii U will be compatible with all current-gen accessories and ...
